Acoustic insulation via structural stiffness

Vibro-acoustics of a concrete funicular floor system.

Can geometry replace mass in sound insulation? Supported by an ETH Foundation postdoctoral grant, this research studied how the doubly curved geometry of funicular floor systems increases stiffness and reduces sound radiation in the low frequencies, using large-scale prototypes and hybrid experimental-numerical methods based on Laser Doppler Vibrometry.
