Funicular floor systems
Reducing embodied carbon of building structures with compression-only floor systems.
Floor slabs dominate the embodied carbon of multi-storey buildings. Funicular, compression-only floor systems use geometry to carry loads with a fraction of the material of flat slabs. This research covered the structural design, digital fabrication and prototyping of funicular floors, including the systems exhibited at the Venice Biennale and integrated in the HiLo unit.
